Mary Leakey (1913-1996) was a prominent British paleoanthropologist and archaeologist known for her significant contributions to the understanding of human evolution in East Africa. She discovered the first fossil skull of the Proconsul, an extinct primate thought to be an ancestor of humans. Alongside her husband Louis Leakey, she found important remains of Homo erectus and australopithecines, including the robust skull of Zinjanthropus in the Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania. Leakey led excavations and developed a classification system for stone tools, earning recognition as a pioneer in paleoanthropology.
