She made history as the first woman to serve as the Governor of the Gila River Indian Community from 1994 to 2000. Prior to this, she was the Lieutenant Governor from 1990 to 1994 and again starting in 2003. A dedicated advocate for Native American issues, she focused on poverty, water rights, and the development of casinos to support her community. Thomas passed away on August 21, 2014, leaving a legacy in tribal politics.
