She excelled in mathematics, history, and physics during high school and earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and physics from Hastings College in 1959, graduating at the top of her class. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, allowing her to spend two years at Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany. She obtained her master's degree in 1962 and a Ph.D. in 1964 in ring theory, becoming the second woman to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics. Gray has held various academic positions and contributed significantly to women's representation in mathematics.
