Watanabe distinguished herself in the 1960s by utilizing pastel colors and creating shōjo horror with 'Blue Foxfire' and mystery stories like 'Glass no Shiro'. She won the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1971. In the 1980s, she shifted her focus to redisu-josei, producing works such as 'Kinpeibai', which drew from 19th-century Chinese erotic literature.
