Matei Pavel Haiducu was a Romanian secret agent who defected to France in 1981. Born on May 18, 1948, in Bucharest, he served in the Securitate's Foreign Intelligence Directorate. He was ordered to assassinate dissident writers Virgil Tănase and Paul Goma but instead informed French intelligence, leading to a series of dramatic events. After fetching his family, he settled in France, assumed the name Mathieu Forestier, and published a book about his experiences. Haiducu passed away in 1998.
