He landed on the Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge next to the Kremlin, aiming to create a 'virtual bridge' to reduce Cold War tensions. His flight had significant repercussions, leading to the dismissal of several high-ranking Soviet military officials and assisting Mikhail Gorbachev's reform efforts. Rust was sentenced to four years in prison but was released after 14 months.
