He served in the Federal Ministry for the Environment from 2000 to 2013 in various roles, including personal advisor to Secretary of State Rainer Baake. On January 18, 2014, he was appointed Secretary of State in the Hessian Ministry for Economy, Energy, Transport, and State Development, led by Minister Tarek Al-Wazir, but was not reappointed in the next cabinet.
