He began his musical career with the rock band Metak in 1978, serving as their drummer until 1981. Afterward, he took on songwriting for other Croatian artists. Jelavić gained prominence as a solo artist after winning the Split Festival in 1988 with his popular song 'Majko stara'. He currently resides in Split with his wife and has two children.
