Matt Devlin was a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) who participated in the 1980–1981 hunger strikes. Born on April 30, 1950, in Ardboe, Northern Ireland, he was the second of six children in a non-republican family. After returning to Ireland from working in England, he became involved with the local IRA around 1974. Arrested in 1977, he was sentenced to seven years and became involved in various protests during his imprisonment. Devlin actively contributed to building Sinn Féin in Westmeath until his death in December 2005.
