Matthew (Matt) Lygate was a Scottish Marxist revolutionary and political activist known for founding the Workers Party of Scotland. He was also a tailor, poet, and artist. Lygate gained infamy for his conviction of bank robbery in 1972, resulting in a lengthy prison sentence of 11 years for a crime that had a maximum sentence of 24 years, which established a record in Scottish legal history. His political beliefs incorporated strong anti-revisionism and Maoism, particularly noticeable during the 1960s.
