Matta El Meskeen, born Youssef Iskandar in 1919 in Benha, Egypt, was a prominent Coptic Christian cleric. Coming from a wealthy family, he sold all his possessions in 1948 to pursue monastic life at the Monastery of Saint Samuel the Confessor. After leaving the monastery in 1950, he sought solitude in Wadi El Rayan, where he was later joined by other monks. His community grew, with 12 monks by 1964. He passed away on June 8, 2006.
