Major General Matthew John Holmes (29 June 1967 – 2 October 2021) was a senior officer in the British Royal Marines with over 30 years of service. He studied economics at the University of Exeter before joining the Royal Marines and served in locations such as Kosovo and Afghanistan. He led 42 Commando Royal Marines from 2006 to 2008, earning a Distinguished Service Order for his leadership. He was also awarded the United States Legion of Merit. Holmes held the position of Commandant General Royal Marines from 2019 until his passing in 2021.
