Matthew Peter Whittall, born on January 21, 1975, in Cowansville, Quebec, Canada, is a Canada-born composer residing in Finland. He received the Teosto Prize in 2013 for his composition 'Dulcissima, clara, sonans' and was nominated for the Composer of the Year award by the Association of Finnish Music Publishers in 2018. Whittall studied at Vanier College, then the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and earned a Master's degree at Stony Brook University before completing his Doctorate in Music at the Sibelius Academy in 2013. He reached the semifinals in the 2005 Queen Elizabeth Music Competition.
