Matti E. Mäkelä (1905–1995) was a Finnish intelligence officer and naval historian. He focused on maritime history and naval warfare, publishing work on the operations of German warships in WWI. A lieutenant during the summer of 1944, he monitored Soviet naval communications. After the war, he fled to Sweden and worked with the Swedish Army's radio intelligence. He returned to Finland in 1949 and retired from intelligence work in the 1970s. He was the brother of author Jukka L. Mäkelä.
