Väinö Matti Juhani Kota, born on June 12, 1939, in Viipuri, is a Finnish artist and illustrator based in Tampere. He graduated as a set designer from the Taideteollinen korkeakoulu in 1965 but initially worked as a shoe designer before becoming a free artist. Kota began illustrating children's books over the age of 40, notably for Titvi Ikäheimo's 'Hiiren häät' in 1981. He has illustrated works for various authors and taught book graphics. Kota is married to textile designer Marja Liisa Helena Vilkki since 1965.
