He documented social changes and the transformation of rural areas, often showcasing various northern communities. Saanio played a significant role in establishing photography as an art form in Finland. He studied painting and specialized in mural painting, later transitioning to photography. He served as a professor and editor and received multiple awards, including state prizes and the Pro Finlandia medal. Saanio was also an honorary doctor at the University of Lapland.
