Born on February 28, 1930, in Helsinki, he graduated as a veterinarian from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Stockholm in 1956. Waris held various positions in the military, advancing through the ranks from lieutenant in 1957 to general major in 1989. He also became a food hygiene expert in 1966. Waris passed away on January 10, 2020, in Helsinki.
