Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, born on December 29, 1937, is a Maldivian political figure who served as the third President of the Maldives from 1978 to 2008. Before his presidency, he held the position of Minister of Transport. He was elected president by parliamentary nomination in 1978 and was defeated in the October 2008 presidential elections. After his presidency, he led the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) until January 2010, when he retired from politics. In September 2011, Gayoom returned to politics as the leader of the newly formed Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
