Maurice Aerts was a Belgian double bassist born on February 20, 1929, in Saint-Quentin and passed away on March 20, 2012, in Mechelen. He performed with the National Orchestra of Belgium and the BRT Orchestra and became the principal bassist at the Orchestre de la Monnaie. Aerts taught at the Brussels Conservatory, mentoring many renowned bassists such as Etienne Siebens and Korneel le Compte. He was known for forming several double bass quartets and was affectionately called the 'father of double bassists' by Fred Brouwers.
