He studied chemistry and history, earning his degrees from University College London. He taught natural sciences and later became a lecturer in the history of science at the University of Leeds. Crosland published influential works on chemical notation and terminology, receiving the Dexter Award in 1984. He also served as president of the British Society for the History of Science, contributing significantly to the field.
