She was a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria and the niece of Queen Mary. Due to anti-German sentiment during World War I, King George V changed the royal family's name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor and renounced all German titles, prompting May's family to relinquish their German princely titles and adopt the surname Cambridge. Her father was made Earl of Athlone, granting her the courtesy title of 'Lady'.
