She made history as the first African-American and the first woman to serve on the Ardmore City County Commission in 1977. Two years later, she became the first African-American female mayor of Ardmore, Oklahoma, and the first woman in the United States to lead a city of over 30,000 residents. McKerson also owned The Gourmet Restaurant from 1962 to 1997, demonstrating her significant contributions to her community in both politics and business.
