Mbongeni Ngema (May 10, 1955 – December 27, 2023) was a South African writer, lyricist, composer, director, choreographer, and theater producer, best known for the musical Sarafina! Born in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, he began his career as a guitarist in theater. Ngema co-wrote the acclaimed musical Woza Albert! and created works that reflected the spirit of black South Africans under apartheid. He was previously married to actress Leleti Khumalo, who won a Tony Award for her role in Sarafina! and starred in South Africa's first Oscar-nominated film, Yesterday.
