Medet Mete Cengiz was a prominent Turkish academic, born on November 15, 1946, in Diyarbakır. He graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1971 and completed his doctoral studies in general surgery there in 1976. Cengiz obtained a second doctorate in cardiovascular surgery at Uludağ University. He became an associate professor in 1984 and later a full professor in 1991. He served as the rector of Uludağ University from August 2008 until his death from lung cancer on January 29, 2011.
