Medgar Evers was an American civil rights activist in Mississippi and a field secretary for the NAACP. A World War II veteran, he fought against segregation at the University of Mississippi and sought to expand opportunities for African Americans, including voting rights. Evers was assassinated in 1963 by Byron De La Beckwith, a member of a white citizens' council. His death sparked civil rights protests and led to further activism. His wife, Merlie Evers, became a prominent activist herself. Evers was posthumously awarded with the NAACP Spingarn Award in 1963.
