Mehdi Karroubi is an Iranian politician and cleric, born on September 26, 1937, in Lorestan Province. He is a supporter of the Islamic Republic and was a key figure during the Iranian Revolution alongside Ayatollah Khomeini. Karroubi is recognized as a leader of the Islamic left and part of the reformist movement. He served as a founding member of the Combatant Clergy Association, was elected as a parliament member, and chaired the Iranian parliament from 1989 to 1992 and 2000 to 2004. He also ran in the controversial 2009 presidential elections.
