Meira Kumar is an Indian politician and served as a member of the Parliament for five years. She was the candidate for the United Progressive Alliance for the President of India in the 2017 elections and was elected as the first woman Speaker of the Lok Sabha, serving from 2009 to 2014. A former lawyer and diplomat, she was previously elected to the Lok Sabha in terms 8, 11, 12, and 14. During Manmohan Singh's government, she served as the Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment from 2004 to 2009.
