Melvin Thompson was an American college basketball player and coach, born on October 5, 1932, in Richmond, Indiana. He played under Everett Case at North Carolina State University and had a semi-pro career before becoming an assistant coach at The Citadel in 1959. Later, he served as head coach from 1960 to 1967, amassing a record of 67–96. His coaching career ended after an 8-17 season, which was detailed in Pat Conroy's memoir. He was recognized by the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975. Thompson passed away on February 5, 2009.
