Melba Phillips (February 1, 1907 - November 8, 2004) was an American physicist and pioneering science educator. She was among the first doctoral students under J. Robert Oppenheimer at UC Berkeley, earning her PhD in 1933 when few women were in science. In 1935, Oppenheimer and Phillips described the Oppenheimer-Phillips process, contributing to nuclear physics. Phillips refused to cooperate with a congressional inquiry during the McCarthy era, leading to her dismissal from Brooklyn College, which later apologized. She taught at various universities, authored scientific books, and was active in physics education associations.
