Menelik Shabazz (May 30, 1954 - June 28, 2021) was a British film director, producer, educator, and writer from Barbados. He was a pioneer in the development of independent Black British cinema, significantly impacting the contemporary British film landscape over more than 30 years. His most famous film is "Burning an Illusion" (1981). In the 1980s, he co-founded Kuumba Film Production Company and Ceddo Film and Video Workshop, and he was a founding father of the Black Filmmaker Media Project, publisher of the Black Filmmaker Magazine, and initiator of the BFM International Film Festival.
