Mercè Bayona i Codina was a Catalan poet born in Els Hostalets d'en Bas on July 3, 1903. Though she started studying teaching in Tarragona, she discontinued her studies and spent her life with her children in her husband's ancestral home in Cogolls. She began writing poetry at the age of seventeen, with her most prolific period from 1923 to 1927. Her work celebrated the simplicity of the land and forests surrounding her. She passed away on September 30, 1972, and in the 1990s, poetry awards were named in her honor.
