After graduating from the Cuban School of Home Economics in 1949 and studying further at New York University, she established the first occupational therapy school in Spain during the early 1960s. Abella faced significant challenges working with medical professionals in Spain, contributing to her field until her retirement in 2001. She is also a member of several professional associations and received notable awards for her contributions.
