In 1973, she entered politics as a councilor and made history in 1979 as the first woman in Spain to head a financial institution. She served as a deputy in the Spanish Congress from 1983 to 1986 and later became a member of the Basque Parliament. She left politics in 1990, returning to education and becoming a small business owner before her death on August 20, 2002.
