Merve Kavakcı (born October 30, 1968, in Ankara) was elected as a member of parliament for Istanbul in 1999. Her entry into parliament was blocked by then-President Suleyman Demirel due to her wearing a hijab, leading to a major political crisis in Turkey. Consequently, she lost her Turkish citizenship and faced persecution in the country before emigrating to the United States. She is the sister of Roza Kavakcı, a member of the Turkish parliament, and currently serves as Turkey's ambassador to Malaysia.
