Captain Mervyn Robert George Wingfield (1911–2005) was a distinguished Royal Navy officer best known for his submarine command during World War II. Wingfield narrowly survived a sinking after a collision in the North Sea. Notably, he became the first British submarine commander to sink a Japanese submarine, I-34, in 1943. He commanded several submarines, gaining recognition for his tactical skills and bravery. Post-war, he held various naval commands and staff positions, including as Naval Attaché during the Suez crisis, before retiring in 1963. His memoirs were published in 2012.
