Mestre Conga, born José Luiz Lourenço on February 2, 1927, in Ponte Nova, is a Brazilian composer and sambista. He was one of ten children of a farmer and accordionist. At six, he moved to Belo Horizonte, where he became influential in the samba genre, particularly in the carnival scene. He founded the Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Inconfidência Mineira in 1950, contributing significantly to samba enredo during the carnival parades in Belo Horizonte. He is recognized for his role in popularizing samba in the region.
