Metropolitan Alexander, known in secular life as Georgios Gianniris, was an influential Eastern Orthodox Archbishop and Primate of the Orthodox Archdiocese of Nigeria. He served from 2004 until his passing in June 2023, overseeing the regions of Nigeria, Niger, Benin, and Togo. Following his appointment on 27 October 2004 in Alexandria, Egypt, he played a key role in promoting Orthodox Christianity in Africa and contributed significantly to the church's expansion and activities in the region.
