Michael Aschbacher, born on April 8, 1944, is an American mathematician known for his contributions to finite group theory. He played a significant role in the classification of finite simple groups during the 1970s and 1980s. Later, it was revealed that the classification was incomplete due to unresolved cases of certain groups. In 2004, Aschbacher and Stephen Smith addressed this gap with two comprehensive books totaling about 1300 pages. Aschbacher currently serves as the Shaler Arthur Hanish Professor of Mathematics at the California Institute of Technology.
