Michael George Cowling is an Australian pure mathematician known for his contributions in harmonic analysis, representation theory, and the geometry of Lie groups. Born in 1949 in Melbourne, he earned his BSc (Hons) in 1971 from the Australian National University and his PhD in 1974 from Flinders University. He became a professor at the University of Genoa and later the University of New South Wales. Cowling received the Australian Mathematical Society Medal in 1989 and was elected a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1993.
