Michael Daniel Higgins, born on April 18, 1941, is the ninth and current president of Ireland, a position he has held since November 11, 2011. Prior to his presidency, he served as the chairman of the Labour Party and represented Galway West in the Dáil Éireann. Between 1993 and 1997, he was the Irish Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht. In addition to his political career, Higgins is also recognized as a poet, sociologist, author, and television presenter. He made a historic state visit to the United Kingdom in April 2014.
