After his retirement, he founded the Birtzberg Observatory in Bornheim, a non-commercial initiative aimed at popularizing visual astronomical observation, sharing content on platforms like YouTube and Instagram. In 1989, he discovered a total of 5 asteroids at the La Silla Observatory in Chile, and the asteroid (12747) Michageffert was named in his honor.
