Standing at 6 ft 6 in, he played as a number eight and was capped ten times for Ireland, beginning with the 1979 Five Nations tournament. Gibson mainly played for Leinster and had stints with Munster and at club level for Cork Constitution, Lansdowne, and London Irish. He also represented the Irish Universities team during a tour of New Zealand while studying at Trinity College Dublin.
