Sir James Michael Gow was a distinguished British Army officer born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, in 1924. He served as a general and was the Commander of the British Army of the Rhine from 1980 to 1983, simultaneously commanding NATO's Northern Army Group. After his tenure in Germany, he held the position of Commandant at the Royal College of Defence Studies in London from 1984 until 1986. Gow's contributions to military leadership were significant during his career until his passing in Edinburgh in 2013.
