He served as a Professor of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Liverpool. Hennell has been involved with the journal Software Testing, Verification and Reliability as an editorial board member. Initially researching Nuclear physics, he transitioned to software testing, focusing on static code analysis and developing the Linear Code Sequence and Jump concept. In 1975, he founded Liverpool Data Research Associates Ltd. to commercialize relevant software testing tools.
