Michael John Smith (1945–1986) was an American engineer and astronaut who served as the pilot of the Space Shuttle Challenger during the ill-fated STS-51-L mission. Tragically, the shuttle disintegrated 73 seconds after launch, resulting in the loss of all seven crew members. Smith, who earned a Master's degree in aerospace engineering, logged 4,867 flight hours and flew 28 different types of aircraft throughout his naval career. Following the Challenger disaster, he was posthumously promoted to captain by Congress, and a chair was established in his honor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.
