Michael Knakkergaard Jørgensen was a Danish mountaineer born on December 5, 1967, in Copenhagen. He made history in May 1995 by being the first Dane to summit Mount Everest, reaching the peak via the north side in Tibet. Tragically, he died on April 30, 1999, in Nepal while descending Mount Makalu, the world's fifth highest mountain. During the descent, a rope broke that was securing him, causing him to fall approximately 500 meters just a few hundred meters from the summit of the 8,462-meter high mountain.
