He served as a Member of Parliament for six years from 1990, initially with the National Party, before defecting to New Zealand First and resigning in 1996 due to a scandal. Laws is also known as a media personality with roles in radio and as a columnist. Since 1995, he has been active in local government, serving on several councils, the district health board, and as Mayor of Whanganui from 2004 to 2010.
