Michael R. McVaugh, born on December 9, 1938, in Washington, D.C., is an American historian of science specializing in the history of medicine during the Middle Ages and early modern period. He studied at Harvard University and received his PhD from Princeton University. He has been a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 1964 and was a distinguished scholar focusing on the development of medical sciences in medieval universities, particularly Montpellier, and the evolution of medicine in the Iberian Peninsula. He received the George Sarton Medal in 2010.
