Michael Walter was a German luger born on March 12, 1959, in Pirna. He started his luge career at SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal after being discovered in Zwickau. Walter participated in junior European Championships and was an alternate in the 1980 Olympic Games. He won the silver medal in 1981 World Championships and secured a World Cup win in 1984. Despite a promising career, he finished fourth in the 1984 Olympics and fifth in the 1988 Olympics. After retiring from sports, he studied civil engineering and ran a construction company in Annaberg-Buchholz.
