Michaił Matafonow was a Soviet politician born on December 28, 1928, in Alija, Far Eastern Krai (Russian SFSR) and died on January 16, 2012, in Chita. He served as the First Secretary of the Chita Regional Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1973 to 1986. Matafonow held various positions in Komsomol and the Communist Party throughout his career, including Deputy Member of the Central Committee and a member of the regional Duma. He was honored with the title of honorary citizen of the Chita region in 2003.
